Best Storage Systems for Storing Plasterboard and Gyprock
For commercial quantities of plasterboard, Gyprock and drywall, a properly designed cantilever racking system is generally the most flexible and efficient storage solution. Its open-front design provides unobstructed access to long sheets, while the arms and additional supports can be configured to keep the material flat.
For smaller quantities or complete packs, selective pallet racking may provide a cost-effective alternative. The right system will depend on the sheet dimensions, pack weights, available warehouse space and how frequently the material needs to be accessed.
How Should Plasterboard Be Stored?
Plasterboard should be stored horizontally in a dry, weather-protected location. Sheets should sit on a flat, level platform or across full-width supports positioned at intervals of no more than 600mm. Correct support helps prevent the boards from sagging, bending or becoming permanently distorted.
This recommendation aligns with CSR Gyprock’s plasterboard storage guidance. It is also important to protect the edges and corners of each sheet, as these areas can easily be damaged during loading, storage and retrieval.
Cantilever Racking for Plasterboard
Cantilever racking is particularly suitable for building suppliers, manufacturers and warehouses storing large quantities of long or irregular materials. Unlike conventional shelving, cantilever racks do not have front columns obstructing access to the stored products.
The system can be designed with appropriately spaced arms, spreader bars or continuous supports to distribute the weight evenly across the plasterboard. Different sheet lengths and product types can also be separated across individual storage levels, making stock easier to identify and retrieve.
Depending on the warehouse layout, cantilever racking can be installed in single-sided configurations against a wall or as double-sided rows accessible from both sides. Galvanised options may also be considered for demanding environments, although plasterboard itself must still be protected from moisture and weather exposure.
Can Selective Pallet Racking Store Plasterboard?
Selective pallet racking can be suitable when smaller volumes of plasterboard are stored in complete packs or on purpose-designed supports. It can be a practical option for warehouses already using pallet racking and forklift handling equipment.
However, the system must be configured for the dimensions and weight of the plasterboard being stored. Loose sheets should not simply be placed across unsupported beams. Suitable decking or full-width supports may be required to keep the sheets level and prevent damage.

Before selecting a storage system, consider:
- The length, width and weight of the plasterboard sheets
- Whether sheets are stored individually or in complete packs
- The number of different products requiring direct access
- Forklift clearances and material-handling procedures
- The available floor space and storage height
- How frequently stock is loaded and retrieved
