Longspan Shelving for Warehouse, Workshop and Stockroom Storage

Longspan shelving, also called long span shelving or longspan racking, uses upright frames, horizontal beams and shelf surfaces to create accessible storage bays. It is a practical option for hand-loaded cartons, tools, parts and bulky items that need more space than small compartment shelving provides.

Storeplan can configure the layout for warehouse picking, workshop supplies, electrical and automotive parts stores, retail stockrooms and archive storage. Start with what you store and how it is accessed: the right shelf width and depth should keep stock organised without making items at the back difficult to reach.

Choosing the Right Bay Size and Shelf Layout

  • Width: measure the items or containers that will sit beside one another, including the space needed to handle them. Confirm whether quoted dimensions refer to the overall bay or usable shelf space.
  • Depth: choose a shelf that supports your items while allowing practical access. Deep shelves can suit larger cartons, but small parts may be easier to manage in shallower shelves or bins.
  • Height and shelf levels: allow enough clearance for the tallest stored items and the method used to reach them. A taller frame is only useful when staff can safely access the proposed levels.
  • Layout: allow for doors, columns, walkways and the movement of people and equipment. Consider whether staff will pick from one side or both sides of a shelving run.

Timber, Wire Mesh or Steel Shelves?

The shelf surface should suit the size and shape of your stock, the working environment and the specified load.

  • Timber shelves provide a continuous surface for cartons, containers and general stock. Confirm the specified board and supports for the load.
  • Wire mesh shelves provide an open surface. Check that the bases of your items are suitable for the mesh openings; small loose items may need containers.
  • Steel shelves are one of Storeplan's available shelf options. Ask our team to confirm the shelf construction, supports and load rating for the items you plan to store.

Discuss moisture, cleaning requirements and any specialist storage conditions with our team so the materials and finish can be specified for the application.

Understanding Shelf and Bay Load Ratings

Storeplan offers longspan configurations with capacities up to 500kg per shelf level. The rating depends on the beams, shelf surface, supports and complete configuration. It is not a promise that every width, shelf option or layout carries the same load.

A uniformly distributed load is spread evenly across the shelf. A single heavy item concentrated in one position creates a different loading condition and needs to be assessed accordingly. The total capacity of a bay is also a separate limit. Provide the weight and dimensions of your items when requesting a quote so Storeplan can confirm the appropriate specification.

Accessories and Custom Layouts

Options include mobile bays with heavy duty castors, security cages and tool rack storage. Mobile configurations require their own load and operating specification. Sizes and colours can be discussed to suit your project.

For projects that need additional floor space, see our longspan-supported mezzanine systems. A mezzanine needs a purpose-designed structure; standard shelving should not be assumed suitable to support a floor.

A Longspan Installation for Cetnaj Maitland

Storeplan supplied Cetnaj Maitland with black Longspan shelving using adjustable steel shelves, 2400mm-high frames and a mix of bay lengths and depths. Single- and double-sided layouts provided storage suited to the electrical wholesaler's stock and available space.

Frequently Asked Questions About Longspan Shelving

What is longspan shelving used for?

Longspan shelving is used for hand-loaded cartons, parts, tools, archive boxes and other stock that needs accessible shelf storage. Typical applications include warehouse picking areas, workshops, trade stockrooms and parts stores. The bay size, shelf surface and load rating should be selected around the items you need to store.

How much weight can Storeplan longspan shelving hold?

Storeplan offers configurations rated up to 500kg per shelf level. The actual capacity depends on the selected components, dimensions and load distribution. An evenly distributed load differs from a heavy item concentrated in one position. Ask us to confirm both the shelf rating and the total bay capacity for your intended use.

    What sizes are available?

Storeplan lists standard heights of 1800, 2400 and 3000mm; depths of 400, 600 and 800mm; and widths of 1200, 1800 and 2400mm. Contact the team to confirm available combinations, usable shelf space and the configuration suited to your stock.

Should I choose timber, wire mesh or steel shelves?

Storeplan offers timber, wire mesh and steel shelf options. Discuss your item sizes, weights, working environment and cleaning requirements with the team. Ask us to confirm the shelf construction, supports and rated capacity for the selected configuration.

Is longspan shelving the same as pallet racking?

Longspan shelving is generally used for hand-loaded items, while pallet racking is designed around palletised loads and forklift handling. The systems have different components and load requirements. Tell us how you load, store and retrieve your stock so we can recommend the appropriate system.

Can I adjust the shelves or extend the layout later?

The shelf levels are adjustable, and future changes can be considered when planning the layout. Before adding levels or extending a run, confirm component compatibility, clearances and the complete bay load rating with Storeplan. Extra shelves do not automatically increase the total load the bay can carry.

How much does longspan shelving cost?

Storeplan offers obligation-free layout planning and quoting. For a quote, provide your available space, preferred shelf sizes and material, item weights, number of levels and delivery location. Tell us whether you need installation and ask the team to confirm the inclusions and total project price.

Does Storeplan deliver and install longspan shelving?

Yes. Storeplan provides supply, delivery and installation, with layout planning before the order is finalised. Contact the team with your location and project requirements to confirm the service scope, timing and site access arrangements. Installation should follow the specification and instructions for the selected system.
