What is Selective Pallet Racking?
Selective racking is the most common system in Australian warehouses and the one most people picture when they think of pallet racking. Every pallet sits in its own position and is directly accessible, so you can pick any pallet at any time without moving another one first.
It's also known as adjustable pallet racking, because the beam levels move to suit different pallet heights as your stock changes. It works with any standard forklift, is designed around virtually any pallet size or weight, and goes up to 12.8m where the building allows.
When Selective Racking is the Right Choice
Full selectivity is what you're paying for. If you're picking mixed orders, running first in first out, or holding a wide product range with low volume per line, nothing else comes close for accessibility.
The trade-off is floor space. You need an aisle between every pair of runs, so roughly 30% of your floor ends up as pallet storage. Drive-in racking gets that closer to 60% and double deep racking sits between the two, but both cost you access.
Most warehouses we fit out run a mix. Selective for the pick face and the slower lines, something denser for bulk stock that turns over as a full lane. Part of the measure is working out where that split sits for your operation.
Designed Around Your Pallets and Your Forklifts
Bay and beam configuration comes down to three things: the pallet you handle, the weight per level, and the truck working the aisles. Get any of those wrong and you end up with aisles too narrow for the forklift you upgraded to, or beam levels that waste 400mm of height on every bay.
We design around all three, and there's a range of accessories for stock that doesn't sit neatly on a standard pallet. If the load is long or awkward rather than just oversized, cantilever racking is usually the better answer than forcing it onto selective.
Every system is designed and installed to AS4084 and comes with load rating signage, which is a requirement once the racking is in service.
Pallet Racking Inspections
We inspect existing selective racking across New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, whether we installed it or not.
Damaged uprights are the leading cause of rack collapse and the failure is progressive, so a bent frame can stand for months before it goes. If you've had a forklift impact, inherited racking with a building, or you're not sure what your system is rated to, that's what an inspection is for.
Who We Install For
Selective racking suits nearly every industry, which is why it's the default. We've installed it for electrical wholesalers, rural supply stores and feed mills, mine sites and energy providers, abattoirs and food processing facilities, council depots, building supply and hardware stores, tyre wholesalers, car dealerships and distribution centres across Australia.
Measure, Design and Quote
We come out and measure before we quote, so what you get back is a layout for your building rather than a price list. That includes a straight answer on whether selective is the right system or whether something denser would serve you better.
We install nationally, with representatives in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Adelaide. Call 1300 551 281 to arrange a measure.
Frequently Asked Questions About Selective Pallet Racking
Selective Pallet Racking is a popular and cost-effective system of industrial pallet racking that maximises vertical space in warehouses. It efficiently resolves space restriction issues and enhances storage capacity.
Up to 12.8m. In practice the limit is usually the building rather than the racking, since sprinkler heads, roof line and forklift mast height all come into it before you reach the system’s maximum. We check all three at the measure.
Selective Pallet Racking is savvy storage that facilitates easy access to each pallet, thus preventing unneeded manoeuvring time in accessing goods. It optimises the storage space and streamlines processes, acting beyond physical storage – improving productivity, reducing costs, and boosting operations.

Selective gives you every pallet, any time, at the cost of floor space. Drive-in fits the most pallets into the space but works last in, first out and needs uniform stock in each lane. Double deep sits in between, adding up to 30% capacity over selective without the access limits of drive-in, though it needs a specialist reach truck.
Most warehouses end up running a mix rather than committing the whole floor to one system.
AS4084 expects a documented inspection routine once racking is in service, and WHS regulators treat the standard as the benchmark. Run a visual check as part of normal operations, a documented internal inspection monthly or quarterly depending on how busy the site is, and a formal inspection at least annually or after any significant impact.
